I’ve always been a supporter of marriage equality and dreamt of photographing a same sex wedding. I mean, why shouldn’t two people that want to spend forever together be allowed to get married. The fact that LGBT couples legally couldn’t until a few months ago seemed crazy to me. I didn’t have any gay friends or family that were challenged by it though. So whilst I celebrated the change, it felt like it was from afar. That was, until I met Jess & Florence.
Jess & Flo are two of the most intelligent, most generous, kindest women I have had the pleasure of crossing paths with – and they are madly in love and have been for over 10 years. Suddenly, this win for marriage equality was even more meaningful to me as their wedding photographer. To say I was excited to be a part of this step in their journey, would be an understatement.
Here’s a glimpse into their Brisbane Same Sex Wedding Day last Saturday:
Jess & Flo started their day at their apartment in Fortitude Valley here in Brisbane, surrounded by their closest friends – that made up their bridal party. Having a large bridal party of 10 only added to the celebration and made their morning even more fun… for them & for me!
I hadn’t really thought about it too much – but photographing the wedding of two brides meant photographing twice as many pretty details. I LOVE the pretty details so I was more than happy to oblige…
Jess & Flo decided to get dressed together as they had already seen each other in their gowns (and we even did a pre-wedding portrait session with them at the Brisbane Powerhouse, blog post coming soon!) and we orchestrated a reveal to their bridal party… Gosh, I adore these moments! They are just so much fun!
SAME SEX WEDDING CEREMONY VENUE: UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND
Before long it was time to make our way to the University of Queensland at St Lucia – this is where Jess & Flo first met all those years ago, so it made sense that it would also be the place that they would become a married couple!
It was really important to them to spend as much time with their guests as possible, so they decided to do their bridal party portraits & family photos before the Ceremony (which honestly, worked a treat and made their day even more relaxed!)
Seriously, how beautiful are these two women – talk about making my job easy!
Florence studied Law here at the University of Queensland and really wanted some photos in the library with some of the bridal party that were a part of her law tribe… as I glanced down, I saw Jess waiting – and the reflection in the library glass couldn’t have been any more perfect…
After we had finished with the photos, it was time for these two girls to get married! Entering at the same time, Flo & Jess were escorted down the aisle by both of their fathers…
Annie from Annie Grace Ceremonies led the most beautiful ceremony for Jess & Flo – I don’t cry often but honestly, I struggled to keep it together during their ceremony!
Afterwards, the guests were treated to the most generous grazing table I have ever seen. Accompanied of course by a glass of Pimms or refreshing Mojito, before boarding a privately chartered City Cat to transport them to the reception at Madame Wu’s on the Eagle Street Pier.
This was such an amazing way to look after their guests – especially since they had international friends visiting. What an amazing view of the city from the Brisbane River, just as the sun was starting to set. Magic.
SAME SEX WEDDING RECEPTION VENUE: MADAME WU, BRISBANE
Once they arrived, the newlyweds entered their Reception to the sound of a roaring applause and celebrated the night away with all their friends & family…
There were some incredible speeches – Florence’s dad Philip even included a song for the newly married couple…
The girls also took centre stage to say some sweet words before cutting their cake…
Before hitting the dance floor, there was one more treat for Jess, Flo and their guests – a Chinese Lion Dance. In the Chinese culture is believed to bring good luck & fortune to the married couple. This was a first for me and made this incredible wedding even more memorable!
Congratulations again Jess & Flo on become each others wifey… I have no doubt that the future holds such amazing things for you both. Together there is nothing in the world you won’t be able to do! Lots of love, Kylie x
p.s this was the view of the dance floor as I left! This crowd sure knew how to party! Even after 12 hours of coverage, I actually didn’t want to leave (but my weary body made me!)
I’d love to hear what you think! Leave me a comment below, I’m sure the newlyweds would appreciate some kind words to:
